  • The Local, a Royal Caribbean original series, celebrates people around the world, their unique passions and their culture. In our premier season, we highlight three locals from Alaska.   Episode 3: Wilderness explorer and cofounder of Alaska Alpine Adventures Dan Oberlatz has been exploring Alaska's vast wilderness since 1992. In his time there, he has systematically explored remote and inadequately understood regions of the Alaskan wilderness. With nearly 20 exploratory expeditions and multiple expeditions across Alaska, Dan is likely the leading authority on the backcountry of the northern Aleutian and southern Alaska ranges.   In this episode of The Local, Dan revisits the excitement and solitude he experienced on his first visit to the backcountry of Alaska. Watch as Dan is dropped off in the middle of the wilderness in Denali National Park and Preserve.    From this episode:   Wilderness Express Train: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacr... The Wilderness Express Luxury Dome Railcars are attached to the end of the Alaska Railroad's Denali Star train. Trains run between Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali National Park and Fairbanks. The Dome’s glass ceilings allow riders to enjoy a 360-degree view of the Alaska coastline and mountain ranges.   Alaska Alpine Adventures: http://www.alaskaalpineadventures.com/ Alaska Alpine Adventures, a wilderness outfitter co-owned by Dan Oberlatz, offers backpacking trips, guided kayaking and hiking tours, basecamp hiking adventures, backcountry ski tours and custom adventures in Alaska's biggest and most remote mountain ranges.   Denali National Park and Preserve: https://www.nps.gov/dena/index.htm Denali is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet above sea level. Denali National Park is six million acres of wilderness. K2 Aviation: http://www.flyk2.com/ K2 Aviation has a long history of flying in Alaska; they are owned and operated by the Rust family, who have been flying Alaska’s backcountry since 1963. Take a sightseeing tour, or get dropped off in the middle of the wilderness like Dan. We recommend the sightseeing tour. Wow this entire series is so well done. Inspirational stories and fantastic cinematography. As an amateur filmmaker, I'm tremendously inspired. My sincere congratulations to the producers (and many thanks to my favorite cruise line for sponsoring the work)!
